10 Reasons Why It’s Time To Go Vegan With Skincare
As the UK embraces veganism and awareness around vegan choices grows, the number of us committed to rejecting animal products in our diet, clothing and cosmetics has quadrupled to 600,000 in the last five years.
Adopting vegan principles in processes and products is now at the forefront of most industries' minds with skincare companies the latest to open up new ranges of plant-based products aimed at the flourishing vegan market.
With November now recognised globally as Vegan Awareness Month, natural beauty expert and owner of Mrs Frisbee’s All Naturals vegan skincare brand Julie Frisbee gives ten compelling reasons why it’s now time to go vegan with skincare.
1. VEGAN SKINCARE PRODUCTS CONTAIN NO ANIMAL PRODUCTS OR BY-PRODUCTS
Julie says: “Vegan skincare brands only use plant-based or synthetic ingredients in their products, whereas non-vegan brands rely on animal products and by-products to make theirs. Regular skincare products incorporate honey from bees, lanolin from sheep, collagen from pigs, silk from silkworms, keratin from bird feathers, carmine from beetles and uric acid from cow urine. Some of them have a damaging effect on skin. If you wouldn't ingest those things, why absorb them through your skin?”
2. VEGAN SKINCARE PRODUCTS AREN’T TESTED ON ANIMALS
Julie says: “While vegan products contain no animal products or animal by-products they’re not tested on animals either, classing them as ‘cruelty free’. More conclusive, cruelty free testing, such as in-vitro testing, is now readily available and used to determine vegan products’ safety for human use. Regular skincare products are still often tested on animals including rabbits, cat and dogs. And when brands manufacture or sell skincare products in China, animal testing is required by Chinese law.”
3. VEGAN SKINCARE PRODUCTS ARE BETTER FOR SENSITIVE SKIN
Julie says: “Plant-based skincare products are gentler on the skin than chemical-based and synthetic materials in non-vegan products. They have fewer constituents and use oils and other botanical ingredients that are closer to the natural oils and pH balance of our bodies. This means they are more easily absorbed by skin, they let skin breathe more freely and don’t block pores, all of which makes them less likely to cause or aggravate sensitive skin conditions such as acne, eczema, rosacea or psoriasis.”
4. VEGAN SKINCARE PRODUCTS ARE PACKED WITH NUTRIENTS
Julie says: “Our skin is the largest organ in our body and soaks up 60 percent of what we apply to it. Non-vegan skincare products use chemicals that are absorbed into the bloodstream, filtered through the liver and kidneys and ultimately quicken the demise of body cells. Vegan skincare products contain natural ingredients which are high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties and other essential nutrients such as moisturising fatty acids which nourish skin and body.”
5. VEGAN PRODUCTS ARE BETTER FOR THE WHOLE PLANET
Julie says: “Going vegan with skincare means lowering your impact on the planet because non-vegan skincare products contain more synthetic and chemical products capable of damaging the environment. Animals used to produce non-vegan products create more greenhouse gases and need more farmland, food, water and other resources than plant-based ingredients, which are farmed with more sustainable practices. Animal testing labs also produce hazardous and damaging waste.”
6. VEGAN SKINCARE PRODUCTS HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE AFFORDABLE
Julie says: “A higher demand for vegan skincare products has increased their supply from companies that are reducing prices to stay competitive. Previously thought of as luxury items, vegan beauty products are now found at comparable price points to their non-vegan alternatives and sometimes cheaper. And when factoring in the long list of benefits associated with using vegan skincare products, it’s easy to deduce they offer excellent value for anyone’s money.”
7. VEGAN SKINCARE PRODUCTS HAVE CLEARER LABELLING
Julie says: “Vegan skincare makes reading product labels easy. With fewer ingredients than non-vegan products, their natural constituents are usually well known and easily understood. Vegan products make it easy to keep track of everything you’re applying to your skin. Non-vegan products, containing chemicals and synthetics, baffle by science and obscure animal constituents such as pig fat, fish scales and ground animal horn with pharmaceutical terminology.”
8. VEGAN PRODUCT PACKAGING IS ALWAYS ECO-FRIENDLY
Julie says: “If sustainable packaging is the next global challenge, vegan brands are ahead of the curve and leading the way. Due to the nature of the industry’s ethics, they are known to be extremely cautious about their packaging designs and materials. Most vegan skincare products come in eco-friendly packaging made from recycled and biodegradable materials, or in bottles that are returnable and refillable. Every aspect of purchasing a vegan skincare product is earth-friendly.”
9. THERE’S A POSITIVE MENTAL EFFECT FROM BUYING VEGAN
Julie says: “It’s difficult to put a price on freedom from the psychological baggage of knowingly supporting animal exploitation and cruelty. Guilt-free consumer habits produce a clear conscience and peace of mind which add to a healthier outlook, a happier existence and better nights’ sleep. Veganism contributes to a more harmonious future, in which fewer animals are harmed and people are less upset, breeds the kind of positivity many people are searching for.”
10. VEGAN SKINCARE PRODUCTS OFFER TRUE ANTI-AGEING QUALITIES
Julie says: “The wealth of vitamins, minerals, natural antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and fatty acids found in plant-based skincare products are ideal for restoring the health, condition and pH balance of skin. Essential oils and other botanical extracts ward off fine lines, sun damage, a loss of skin elasticity and other signs of ageing. Whereas, chemicals and toxins contained in non-vegan alternatives provide a quick fix which ultimately erodes skin cells and contributes to premature signs of ageing.”
